When Jehoshaphat received word that Moab and Ammon were devising an attack, he immediately sought the Lord. How easy it is to make a decision, only considering God in an afterthought. A lot of our problems could be resolved and even prevented if the counsel of God would be sought in every phase of the Christian life.
Surly Jehoshaphat was shocked, bewildered, and maybe frightened at the thought of an assault, but he focused his attention on the only God of heaven. The result of his actions illustrates the supreme and sovereign power of God. Judah never physically fought the battle.
In his plan to receive the guidance, he set himself to seek God and proclaimed a fast for Judah (2 Chronicles 20:3). Cooperatively and collectively the congregation asked for the help of God (2 Chronicles 20:3). Jehoshaphat admitted that he did not know what to do but was willing to respond to God’s direction (2 Chronicles 20:12). Because of his love and commitment to family, he included all the babies, children, and wives of all the husbands and fathers of Judah in the serious plea to God and plan of survival (2 Chronicles 20:13).
Jehoshaphat knew that the task of defeating Moab and Ammon was something beyond Judah’s physical capabilities. He knew that he could not do it, but God could. In lifestyle, every Christian must practice the belief that He (God) Can! Because of Jehoshaphat’s disposition, God sent prophet Jahaziel who said, “…Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s (2 Chronicles 20:15). He said, “Ye shall not have to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you” (2 Chronicles 20:17). Again, worship brought resolution.
At the conclusion of the battle,
it took Judah three days to collect all the material goods of Moab and Ammon
and they did physically raise a finger in battle. Through God’s providence
He blesses the obedient. The fact that Judah had the opportunity to collect
more goods than they had days for, depicts the abundant blessings God can
bestow upon His elect. They worshipped, fasted, prayed, praised, taught
the Word, listened to God, and obeyed His commands. Following the spiritual
