In the Potter’s Hands

How Readest Thou?
Luke 10:25-27

“And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 27And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself” (Luke 10:25-27).

In the above narrative of scripture Jesus probed the attorney for his understanding and interpretation of scripture. It is important to note the doctrine of Christ belongs to Christ and is need of no human assistance regarding clarification or edits. It has the supreme power of standing on its own. Yet, humanity must make perfect sense out of the majestic Word. So in the text Jesus asked the man about his understanding concerning the critical topic of eternal life. What happens when you are questioned scripturally?

I dialogued with a denominational preacher who condones and teaches a person must believe in Christ, confess Him, and the soul will be saved based upon Romans 10:9-10. The same denominational preacher stated that he does not believe it is necessary for a person to be baptized. He said it is a good thing but if a person believes in Christ and confesses Him, never being baptized, their salvation is secure. The same alleged preacher stated that the commandment of Peter in Acts 2:38 (“…Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.) was not a baptism in water but simply into Christ. The preacher stated that if baptism was necessary, what about the thief on the cross and the souls of faith in Hebrews 11? He said, “They were saved without baptism.” All of that is true in terms of their salvation, but how readest thou? They were saved before the church was an option for humanity. He also said many people teach the concept of baptism not being essential to salvation. True enough, but does that make it scripturally correct? No!

New Testament scripture is clear in the essentiality of baptism in water for the remission of sins. There is no spiritual power in the physical water but there is power in Jesus and He is the one who unleashed the commandment. Prepare yourself to read and respond to the Word correctly because someone may attempt to teach to you a false doctrine. Remember, You are the clay In The Potter’s Hands. God has paved a way to save you today!
