The Game is Quick
James
1:19-20
In multiple ways the Christian scheme and life
applies to athletic outcomes, dynamics, and events. However, in terms of
swiftness it is like one sport in particular. After the score of the
exhilarating touchdown in the game of football there is time for celebration.
The game stops momentarily and a celebration begins. After the baseball or
softball player smacks a homerun, the crowed cheers while the hitter slowly trots
the bases in celebration. Soccer games are usually low scoring events,
therefore celebration after a goal is enjoyed by fans and teammates. When Tiger
hits a hole in one, truly the game stops and all celebrate.
All of the aforementioned athletic disciplines
require speed. Speed and swiftness is also required in the game of
Christianity. Notice the passages: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to
hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God”
(James 1:19-20).“Behold, I come quickly:
hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown” (Revelation 3:11).“Agree
with thine adversary quickly,
whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver
thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast
into prison” (Matthew 5:25).
Unlike football,
baseball, soccer, and golf, the dynamics of Christianity are strongly
applicable to basketball. In the sport of basketball a player can score a
three-point shot, a monster dunk, or an acrobatic layup that makes the arena go
wild. However, there is not time for a quick celebration because in less than 3
seconds the opposing team can replicate the basket and points. In Christianity, time for celebration and time for despair is
limited. If the devil knocks you down, do not get caught wallowing beyond that
which is healthy. As you continue to remain strong, do not get caught celebrating
to the point of lost focus.
Hear swiftly, listen swiftly, agree quickly because Jesus will return quickly. Remember, You are the clay In The Potter’s Hands. God has paved a way to save you today!
