Come See A Man

Part 2
Bring Him To Me

Lesson Text: Mark 9:14-27

Initial Focus: Mark 9:14-18

Here we have a peculiar scene. The Disciples of Christ, some scribes and a multitude of people and onlookers are standing around.   The scribes are questioning the men who have been trained, taught and led by Christ.

The manner or type of questions they asked are not clear but because of the relationship some scribes had with Christ they may have been taunting the disciples, asking them sarcastic questions.

  1. If you are of Christ why is it that you cannot cast out the demon?
  2. Do you have any power?
  3. Is Christ your leader?
  4. How come you cannot follow through on what you believe you should be able to do?
  5. This man is in a fix, dilemma, mess, pickle, perplexed over his son. Can you help him?

We picture a group of people, large group, and it might appear that the disciples are being made a spectacle of because they were unable to cast out the demon of the possessed boy.

Read Mark 9:14-18

Christ is in support of the disciples and he is out to protect them so he does not ask His disciples what they are doing he asks the scribes what they were doing. He wanted to know what the scribes were questioning His men about. He knew that it was possible that they might be abusing them through the art of problematic questions with no real basis or inquiry. In other words, Christ wanted to know “What do you want with my men.” Jesus was talking to the scribes but for whatever reason the scribes did not answer.

The man who had a son with a dumb/mute and evil spirit spoke up to inform Christ that all the fuss was over he and his boy and the fact that the disciples could not cast out the demon from his son. The father was not mad or disgruntled over the inability of the disciples he was concerned and seeking help and deliverance.

This boy was messed up! The boy who was possessed with a demon and in Matthew 17:15 his father referred to him as a lunatic, stating that he often falls into tire and water. In Mark 9:18 we understand that this demonic force of possession had it way with this mans son.

Let it not be named among believers in the body of Christ that we are ripped and carried about by sin. That we are subjected and ruled by sin. This boy was tossed around to the point of foaming at the mouth and gnashing his teeth. He pineth away. In clinical terms this possessed individual was decompensating. He was breaking down on every level. He was physically and mentally being destroyed from the inside out. This demon had him in a way that he could not control.

The Christian should never bee found under the mighty and strong hold of sin for we have been freed from the dominion of sin and death. It is impossible for the Christian to continue in habitual sin.

Can you imagine the pain of this father? He watched his son in utter torture, endure the humiliation and pain. Because the son had a dumb spirit he was not even able to talk back to his father. He could not tell daddy how to help him. He could not tell daddy how to make things better. All he could do was communicate with his eyes and the eyes tell a story. His eyes probably said in a most frantic and frightened stare, “Help me daddy!”

His father could only do what he knew. He apparently heard of Christ, His men and healing power. Because of his pain, his son’s pain, this father was on a mission to see a man name Jesus. If not Jesus then the men inspired by him. But the final destination and source of healing was Christ.

It appears that the disciples should have been able to cast out the demon and handle this matter because of the sharp response of Christ: Read verse 19.

All has been tried and exhausted and now it is time for a man name Jesus to intervene. This is the same Jesus who:

  1. All power was given to.
  2. Could say to the winds and sea peace, be still and have them obey His commands.
  3. Had the power to walk on water.
  4. Had the power to raise the dead to living.
  5. Had the power to heal the sick
  6. Had the power to make the blind see.
  7. Had the power to make the deaf hear.
  8. Had the power to make the lame walk.
  9. Fed 5000 men with five loaves of bread and two fish and collected twelve baskets of leftovers.
  10. Had the courage, faith, decency, and goodness to kick those out of the house of prayer for making it into a den of thieves.
  11. Is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the ending.

This same Christ, this man name Jesus says:

  1. When you get through running around and bouncing your ideas off the wrong person.
  2. After you finish doing things your way.
  3. After you have consulted with every doctor, lawyer, psychologist, psychiatrist, professor, friend, family member, preacher, elder, deacon, bro./sis. in Christ and the problem still persists Christ says bring him unto Me.

You see, your way is not working, bring it to Christ. There is somebody listening that has been wallowing in the quagmire and swamp of life and it is time you bring yourself to Christ. Christ tell the father, “Bring him unto me.”

This man has had a hard time with his son. To keep his son safe took all of his energy and time. He had no life of his own because all of his time was spent making sure his son was safe. If you did know this is a story of deliverance and also a love story of Christ and humanity and a father for his son. This son has been possessed since he was a child. The father has had his hands full for quite some time.

He has seen it all and now he is seeking compassion because he knows a person with compassion will be willing to help him and his son. Read verse 22.

There was just one thing the man had to do and it was believe. This man wanted his son to be made whole. He wanted him delivered from this demonic force. He wanted it so bad he could taste it. He did not want any thing to mess this thing up. He did not want his minor lack of faith to negate his son’s healing, deliverance and restoration. Although this man may have lacked a little faith he had something to shout about and doubt about.

Like the woman with an issue of blood 12 years he had been dealing with this a long time and good portion of his life with nobody having the ability and power to heal and fix his broken son. Yes he has in a small compartment in the back of his mind that stated to him that his life would never change and that his son’s life would never change.

But he also had something to shout about because the man name Jesus he wanted to see was in the house. Now the mixed emotions of triumph and a fraction of disbelief result in the following mental condition and statement: Read verse 24.

In this climatic scene the man is crying and shouting and the people are running toward this great event and moment of deliverance and healing. Read verses 25-27.

There is a man name Jesus that is waiting for you to come see Him so he can dress your battle scars, patch you up and in fact make you all over again. He knows your condition is too much but if you give it to Him he will carry it and cast it away.

Jesus is standing there and His response is bring him to me. He is here to support our needs.
